Historically, the department has been a leader in defining the future of the fast-evolving field of nuclear engineering and radiological sciences. The curriculum is shaped accordingly, so that students will be fully prepared for success when the complete their master's and doctoral programs.

The faculty know that the new millennium requires nuclear engineers for the development of the next generation of nuclear power plants for deployment in the United States and abroad. The department will also play a major role in training scientists and engineers who can advance the application of radiation in medicine, in the dismantling of weapons, and in the disposal of radioactive wastes.

While the department focuses new energy on these emerging needs, its commitment to the more traditional areas of fission systems and radiation transport, plasmas and fusion, materials, and measurements remain strong.

The curriculum in nuclear engineering and radiological sciences is broad and diverse, containing courses ranging from fundamental science and mathematics to specialized engineering applications.
