Graduate Student Funding Resources
If you wish to be considered for any University of Michigan fellowships or assistantships, all application information must be complete along with submission of your GRE scores. Unless otherwise stated, all applicants are automatically considered for financial assistance. Financial assistance may take the form of a Graduate Student Research Assistantship (GSRA), a Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) appointment, or a fellowship.
Tips for fellowship applications:
- Visit the web site Fellowships for CoE Graduate Students which lists government, University, Rackham School of Graduate Studies, and College of Engineering funding opportunities. The next tab contains a summary of deadlines. The list starts by calendar year rather than academic year. Applications are submitted by academic year. Therefore, scroll down to November and December and then back to the top for January.
- Once your last term of attendance grades are posted on your transcript, order a sufficient number of official transcripts for each fellowship application.
- Order a sufficient number of official GRE scores from ETS. Some fellowship sponsors require official scores while others will allow a copy of your scores. Please read the instructions carefully.
- Give your references a list of all the fellowships for which you plan to apply during the application season. It is easier for your references to modify each letter for a specific sponsor if they know all sponsors in advance. You may ask your reference to give you the letters in sealed envelopes so you may mail all application information in one envelope to each sponsor. Or, give your references pre-addressed stamped envelopes to each fellowship sponsor for their own mailing. The concept is to make writing trouble-free for your reference.
Fellowship applications extend November through the end of January with a few deadlines in early spring. We ask that you make fellowship applications a priority. Fellowship application deadlines start in early November with the National Science Foundation (NSF) and Hertz fellowships having one of the first deadlines. The U.S government fellowships are the most pertinent to domestic nuclear- and engineering-related research.
Many fellowships state they are for Ph.D. bound students only. If you are undecided about doctoral studies, approach the application as a doctoral student. It has been our experience that many students continue their studies once they are familiar with graduate school. Apply for as many as possible; you may decline those that are not pertinent to your studies should you determine your research interest after visiting NERS. Additionally, some fellowships ask for a program of study. You may contact our professors and/or visit our areas of research and instructional programs pages where you will find sample schedules specific to areas of study. The department also provides a visitation program for outstanding domestic students and international students living in the United States. However, prior to extending an invitation, we must have your application on file.
Student Funding Resources
Note: Many fellowships are due during the months of November, December, and January; therefore, take the GRE as soon as possible. The GRE is mandatory for fellowship applications. Other fellowships have fluctuating deadlines; pleace check the fellowship descriptions on the funding resources web sites. Scroll by academic year starting with September application deadlines (the site starts by calendar year rather than academic year). Please make your fellowship applications a priority and notify NERS admissions if your application will be submitted late.
